Timber, doors, ironmongery and fixings are ordered and allowed to acclimatise on site before installation to prevent post-fit movement.

Doors are hung, cabinetry is scribed and fitted, trims are mitred and pinned — with dust sheets down, floors protected and daily clean-up as standard.

Snagging & handover
We walk the finished work with you, adjust anything under our own scrutiny, and hand over with the 12-month workmanship guarantee in writing.

Materials we work with
European oak, tulipwood, sapele, accoya and Douglas fir for exposed and hardwood work; primed MDF and moisture-resistant MR-MDF for painted joinery; birch ply for cabinet carcasses and shadow-line detailing. Ironmongery from specifiers including Frank Allart, Croft, Armac Martin and From The Anvil where the specification calls for it.

First fix vs second fix
First-fix carpentry is the structural, hidden work — floor joists, stud walls, roof timbers, door linings, window boards before plaster. Second-fix is everything visible — hung doors, architrave, skirting, ironmongery, cabinetry. Barnett's Bespoke covers both, which matters, because a first-fix mistake makes second-fix impossible to finish neatly.

- How much does bespoke carpentry cost in Hertfordshire?
- Small work like hanging a single internal door starts from a few hundred pounds including ironmongery. A run of fitted alcove cabinetry typically ranges from £2,500 to £8,000+ depending on size, materials and internal fit-out. You'll always get a written, itemised quotation before any work is scheduled.
- How long does a typical joinery project take?
- Hanging four internal doors: one to two days. A pair of fitted alcove units: five to ten days on site plus workshop time. A full library wall or a staircase renewal: two to four weeks. We'll always give you a realistic schedule up front and stick to it.
- Do you supply the doors and ironmongery, or should I?
- Either works. Many clients ask us to source everything so it arrives together and matches specification. If you've already bought doors, we're happy to install client-supplied joinery — we'll just check dimensions and fire ratings before we start.
- Can you match existing period skirting or architrave profiles?
- Yes. If we can't match an existing profile from stock, we have it run to match by a trusted machinist. This matters in Victorian and Edwardian homes where the original mouldings are part of the character.
- Are you a certified fire door installer?
- Yes. Charlie is a BM TRADA registered fire door installer, meaning fire doors are hung with the correct hinges, intumescent seals, closers and gap tolerances and come with proper installer documentation.
- Do you cover the whole of Hertfordshire for carpentry & joinery?
- Yes. Barnett's Bespoke works throughout Hertfordshire, into north London and southern Bedfordshire — including Buntingford, Bishop's Stortford, Stevenage, Hertford, Ware and Hitchin. We're based at Great Hormead Hall, Buntingford, and travel from there.
