What it is
Interior painting and decorating — walls, ceilings, joinery, doors, staircases, cabinetry — including full preparation, filling, sanding, caulking, priming and top-coating. Wallpaper hanging where required. Sprayed and hand-finished joinery.

How a painting & decorating project runs, step by step.

Inspection & specification
We walk the room or the project, agree colours, finishes and any prep issues (damp patches, previous poor decoration, incompatible existing paints), and quote in writing.

Protection & masking
Floors sheeted, furniture moved or covered, joinery masked, sockets and switches taped — dust and paint stay out of everything you own.

Preparation
Filling, sanding, caulking, sanding again. This is 60–70% of the total decoration time on any good job — and it's the invisible reason the finish looks right.

Priming
The right primer for the right substrate — bare timber, MDF, filled plaster, previously oil-painted joinery, wet-area walls. Skipped or wrong primer is the single biggest cause of finish failure.

Top coats
Two or three top coats depending on the paint and the substrate, applied in the right conditions (temperature, humidity, dust control) and given proper drying time between coats.

Cut-in, final coat & clean
Sharp lines cut in by hand, final coat inspected under work light, masking removed cleanly, room swept and vacuumed at handover.

Types of decoration we take on
Full-room repaints, whole-house redecoration, feature walls and wallpapering, staircase and hall repaints, kitchen and bathroom decoration, joinery hand-painting (skirtings, architrave, doors, wardrobes, cabinetry), sprayed cabinet doors, exterior door and window painting, and heritage lime-wash and eggshell for period properties.
Paint systems and finishes
Water-based emulsions and eggshells for walls, water-based satin and eggshell for joinery, traditional oil-based finishes where the client wants them, primer and undercoat systems matched to substrate, and specialist paints (mineral, lime, chalk-based) for period or damp-prone walls.
Sprayed vs hand-painted joinery
Sprayed finishes give a factory-smooth, brush-mark-free result and are ideal for kitchen cabinet doors, fitted wardrobes and paneling. Hand-painted joinery has more character, a slight brush texture, and is often preferred for traditional and period properties. We do both — and we advise honestly which is right for each job.
Working around a lived-in home
Most of our decoration happens in occupied homes. That means dust control, fume management, room-by-room scheduling, and end-of-day tidying that means you can still live normally. It also means being sensitive to what other people in the house are doing — quieter tasks scheduled around school runs and calls.

- Yes — in a dust-controlled environment, with the correct primer and lacquer for the door material. We can spray in the workshop, or under controlled conditions on site depending on scale.
- Do you handle wallpaper hanging?
- Yes — including feature walls, full-room papers and heritage papers. Wall prep is critical to a good paper finish; we quote it as part of the job.
- Can you match existing colours or the National Trust / Farrow & Ball / Little Greene ranges?
- Yes. We work regularly with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Paint & Paper Library, Mylands and the Dulux Heritage range, and can colour-match to existing paintwork.
- Do you cover the whole of Hertfordshire for painting & decorating?
- Yes. Barnett's Bespoke works throughout Hertfordshire, into north London and southern Bedfordshire — including Buntingford, Bishop's Stortford, Stevenage, Hertford, Ware and Hitchin. We're based at Great Hormead Hall, Buntingford, and travel from there.

- How quickly can you start?
